The reigning world champion bull rider from Strong City, Okla., finished second in Friday’s Round 6 of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, while his closest competitor, 2012 world champion Cody Teel, failed to make a qualified ride.

That, and Kimzey’s position in the average of 494 points on six rides, provides him the cushion he needs to go back-to-back with one round left in the 2015 season. He has $261,601 so far this season and is guaranteed to finish no worse than third in the average. He is second in the average as of the ninth night.

How much he finishes with for the season will come down to his final ride Saturday night.
